SDCC: Marvel Vs DC, Head Vs Heart

It's that time of year again! The time of year when nerds around the world flock to a major US city, or around their computer screens, to watch as their favourite entertainment companies lay out their plans to bleed more money from our wallets with their new and exciting versions of our favourite fictional characters.

No, not E3, that was last month. It's the San Diego Comic Con!

There's a lot of stuff getting revealed across the course of the event weekend, but the main event will be the two comic book film giants facing each other down: Marvel Studios vs DC Entertainment.

The game is second guessing what they're going to show off, against what I would rather see in it's place.

MARVEL

Let me start by throwing my journalistic integrity hat out of the ring for a second. I love Marvel. I will undoubtedly be showing a bias toward Marvel, but can you honestly blame me. These guys bring their A-game every single year and still managed to hold their own against the Batman V Superman reveal last year. This year, it's Marvel's turn to bite back. The ball is firmly in their court, as they're poised to lay out the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and show off what's left of Phase 2.

Prediction No. 1: The Character Spot

Every year, someone from one of the Marvel films appears in character and (somehow) surprises everyone by showing off stuff about their upcoming movie.

Head:

Logic dictates it will be either a member of the Guardians of The Galaxy, seeing as it releases next week, or we'll have an Avenger introduce footage for Age Of Ultron. My money would be safely on Star-Lord or Captain America heading onto the stage in either full or partial clobber in introduce some teaser footage.

Heart:

If Marvel want their fans sent into a frenzy, Paul Rudd should show up in the full Ant-Man suit. It's already been revealed via a teaser poster. It would blow minds to see it in all it's glory with it's main star underneath. Given the recent trouble being this movie, it would help restore some faith in this lost origin story flick.

Prediction No. 2: Avengers Assemble

This happened with the original Avengers movie, and I don't see it being any different this year. Last year, Whedon took to the stage alone to reveal the movie. However, since then it's gotten a decent way into filming, so it's unsure who or what will exactly happen to promote the superhero sequel.

Head:

No doubt Whedon will put an appearance in. No doubt there will be at least some con-exclusive test footage. I also expect that whichever Avengers aren't needed in front of the camera right now will also make an appearance. We could probably expect to see Joss backed by Paul Bettany, Mark Ruffalo, Elizabeth Olsen or Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Heart:

We get a fully fledged trailer and everyone shows up. Iron Man, Cap, Thor, Hulk, Widow, Hawkeye, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Ultron, War Machine. Everyone. Perhaps my heart is wanting too much, but a surprise appearance from new cast members would be insane. John Brolin saying that Thanos will begin his attack on Earth in the closing moments of AoU? Gwyneth Paltrow hinting that Rescue might make an appearance? Hell, an Ant-Man cameo wouldn't be out of place.

Prediction No. 3: The Sorcerer Supreme

Doctor Strange is all but confirmed. A director is locked in, Kevin Fiege loves discussing the possibilities for this style of movie, it's clearly a much favoured project now that Ant-Man has fallen on hard times.

Head:

Fiege and director Scott Derrickson take to the stage, show off the full title of the movie and a few bits of concept art for Strange's Wizard get-up. Given that the rumour mill hasn't been throwing around that many names for Strange himself (I can think of maybe 3 at best), it isn't that likely we'll get a casting.

Heart:

Our Strange is revealed. The recent rumours around Joaquin Phoenix taking on the mantle and facial hair of Steven Strange seem to fit the bill, however I'd personally love to see Jared Leto take up the role. Any hints toward who we'll be seeing along Strange form in the film would rock. We're hoping for a name drop of Baron Mordo, Dormammu or The Ancient One.

Prediction No. 4: Subtitle, Eat Fresh

We know Captain America and Thor are getting new outings. Only Iron Man has had numbered sequels. Subtitles give away crucial plot details to everyone who's ever read a comic. Let's have a guess.

Head:

Cap is battling Hydra next, that's for certain. I wouldn't be shocked if the downfall of SHIELD and Hydra's rise is the main focus. Expect something like 'Captain America: The Hydra's Heads' or 'Captain America: Hail Hydra'. In the Thor sequel, Loki is on the throne of Asgard. It's safe to say we'll probably see something like 'Thor: Ragnarok'.

Heart:

With Bucky/Winter Soldier set to return and Chris Evans taking a break from acting, it'd be wise to think we'd see Cap pass the torch. A subtitle like 'Captain America: Fallen Son' or the more blatant 'The Death of Captain America' would seal that in. As for Thor, the Ragnarok option seems fairly logical as well as fantastical. No further speculation should really be necessary with an all Asgardian War on the horizon.

Prediction No 5: The Future

Marvel revealed a number of mystery dates lasting into 2019 for confirmed Marvel movies. It's not saying they'll show off the entire slate, but it's a safe bet they'll set out for at least the next two years what the plans are. It's time to guess what that slate will look like.

Head:

Aug. 1, 2014: Guardians of the Galaxy
May 2, 2015: Avengers: Age of Ultron
July 17, 2015: Ant-Man
May 6, 2016: Captain America 3
July 8, 2016: Doctor Strange
May 5, 2017: Thor 3
July 28, 2017: Guardians Of The Galaxy 2
November 3, 2017: Black Panther
May 4, 2018: Iron Man 4
July 6, 2018: Avengers 3
November 2, 2018: Captain Marvel
May 3, 2019: Ant-Man 2

Heart:

Aug. 1, 2014: Guardians of the Galaxy
May 2, 2015: Avengers: Age of Ultron

May 6, 2016: Captain America: Fallen Son

November 2, 2018: Runaways

DC

They stormed the Con last year with the surprise announcement of Batman V Superman, but things have gotten quite hesitant since then. The early jump into making Justice League, the later delay of all release dates, the denial of a Wonder Woman movie and the refusal to let the world of Arrow and Flash meet up with their movie allies have been more than a little disappointing.

Prediction No 1: Smell What Shazam is Cooking

Dwayne The Rock Johnson has been heavily hinting recently of his plan with DC to take up the mantle of Shazam. It's all but a done deal at this point and we can certainly expect a word on it at SDCC this year. But what will we see?

Head:

Johnson will appear on stage and tell us that he is Shazam, followed by an animated logo. Crowd goes crazy, wait ten months until we see him anywhere near the suit.

Heart:

Johnson appears on stage, tells us he's Shazam, we get a few concept arts of him in the suit, a logo and a director is named, with production to begin between Batman V Superman and Justice League. Boom. DC fix the problem of not setting up the universe before spunking the big team up.

Prediction No 2: A Dark Days Knight

We've seen stills galore of what to expect from Batman V Superman, so what will DC bring to keep us entertained until the release day?

Head:

Given the film is still in production, we're not likely to see any stars. Chances are some studio execs will introduce some early footage or set photos that showcase Bats and Supes staring each other down. Hopefully we see a bit of Lex as well.

Heart:

The cast get a weekend off and show up. Supes, Bats, Wonder Woman, Cyborg and Lex. I suppose Zack Snyder will have to show up as well. A very short, polished teaser would be amazing to see, as well as glimpses of what combat we can expect, maybe some Lex/Supes, Bat/Supes or Wonder Woman in costume. Also, Bryan Cranston murders Jesse Eisenberg and takes his rightful place as a dangerous Lex.

Prediction No 3: We Want Justice

We know it's coming, so Snyder and co will almost be expected to at least comment on who's joining the team up movie DC so desperately want to crush The Avengers.

Head:

With Batman V Superman in production and with Shazam on the horizon, we should probably expect very little new information besides what's already been announce or leaked. A logo would be nice, with the confirmation that Cavill, Affleck and Gadot are returning with Johnson's Shazam set to join them.

Heart:

The full roster is revealed. A new Lantern, a new Flash, possibly a Martian Manhunter and an Aquaman (Jason Momoa, is that still happening?), confirmation that Cyborg will be on the roster. Casting would be a boon, but even in my heart I know that's doubtful.

Prediction No 4: No Wonder

It's the talking point around DC that they're just not up to portraying women all that well, as shown by the constant shunning of Wonder Woman's solo outing and her current position as third fiddle in Batman V Superman. SO, what could change this year?

Head:

DC just aren't this brave. Should Gadot make an appearance, it'll be for BVS. It would be nice to what costume we're getting for Wonder Woman's appearance, but even that doesn't seem like something that will receive full focus.

Heart:

The costume is shown, it doesn't suck, Gadot has substantially bulked up for the role, she's cast as an intervening force between Batman and Superman's fight, is in the Justice League and is getting her own Amazonian centric film a few years after the team up flick. Everyone wants this, but this is a long shot.

Prediction No 5: The Future

DC have a leaked movie slate out too, leading up to May 2018. The leaked slate seems like it could work in in theory, but what would be most logical and what would be the better experience for the fans?

Head:

May 2016 - Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice
July 2016 - Shazam!
Christmas 2016 - Sandman
May 2017 - Justice League
July 2017 - Wonder Woman
Christmas 2017 - Flash / Green Lantern team-up
May 2018 - Man Of Steel 2

Heart:

May 2016 - Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice
July 2016 - Shazam!
Christmas 2016 - Wonder Woman
May 2017 - Flash / Green Lantern Team Up
July 2017 - Batman
Christmas 2017 - Aquaman
May 2018 - Justice League

Of course, anything could happen. Any number of tricks could be well hidden up each studio's sleeve. For all we know, the next big characters will be Speedball and Lobo. Or a Deadpool movie could be out by the time that Justice Leauge eventually comes out. Who knows?

For a reaction to what is revealed at SDCC this year, keep it peeled to Foul Entertainment for a brand new podcast coming in the next few days!
